2 July 1999  Gozo Ministry launches two new Quality Service Charters

Minister for Gozo, Mrs Giovanna Debono receives Roads Section Quality Service Charter from Head of section, Mr Joe Caruana, as Minister of Justice and Local Government, Dr Austin Gatt looks on.

In its efforts to enhance the quality of service given by the various government departments within the Ministry for Gozo, the Ministry today launched two Quality Service Charters for the Roads Section and the Public Library.  The Gozo Ministry now has a total of four departments / sections which have committed themselves to standards of quality.  The two new charters were launched by the Minister for Gozo, the Hon. Giovanna Debono together with the Minister for Justice and Local Government, Dr Austin Gatt.

The Roads Section is responsible for the maintenance, including patching, resurfacing and reconstruction, of road surfaces and pavements in Gozo.  It is also responsible for structural maintenance of central strips and roundabouts, repairs to government-owned walls along main roads, installation and maintenance of road signs and markings and installation and maintenance of road lights.

Minister of  Justice and Local Government, Dr Austin Gatt addresses the audience at the launch of the Gozo Public Library Quality Service Charter.  Also present is Minister for Gozo, Mrs Giovann Debono (fifth from left).

In its Quality Service Charter the Gozo Roads Section is committing itself to repairing minor roads in 48 hours and to replying to any complaints by the public in 4 working days.  The Gozo Roads Section also pledges to inform all neighbourhood residents before undertaking any major roads works.  This will be done through signage and notices at Local Council offices as well as mailing of notices to residents.

The launch of the Roads Section Quality Service Charter was followed by that of the Public Library.  Apart from the obvious facility of borrowing books, the Gozo Public Library also offers various other facilities to its members.  These include an electronic catalogue where the public can access the list of material available at various public libraries in Malta and Gozo.  If certain material is not available at the Gozo Library arrangements can be made for books to be brought over from the Central Public Library in Malta and the University of Malta Library.  The Gozo Public Library also offers audio-visual services such as video tapes and CD-ROMs.  Other activities organised by the library include story telling sessions aimed at strengthening reading habits in children, library orientation visits and exhibitions.

The launch of the Gozo Public Library Quality Service Charter was followed by the inauguration of the Library’s Internet service and the opening of an exhibition of new books by the Minister for Gozo.
