| MAY 11, 1999: LAUNCH OF QUALITY
SERVICE CHARTER AT CENTRAL PUBLIC LIBRARY
Minister of Education, Dr Louis Galea (centre)
addresses the launch of the Central Public Library Quality Service Charter.
Also present were, from left, Mr Joseph R. Grima, Permanent Secretary, OPM, Dr
Austin Gatt, Minister of Justice and Local Government, Mr Frederick Fearne, Permanent
Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Philip Borg, Director of Libraries and Archives and
Mr Joseph Debattista, Officer in Charge of Central Public Library.
"The Central Public Library has undergone an extensive
refurbishment programme aimed at improving the level of service delivered to the public.
This includes the implementation of a computerisation programme for all searching,
browsing and borrowing facilities. The upgrading which has taken place has improved the
quality of material being offered, introduced service delivery standards and diversified
the range of services provided. The result of these improvements led to the Central Public
Library reaching the level required to develop a Quality Service Charter." This was
announced by Dr Louis Galea, Minister of Education during the launch of the first Quality
Service Charter in the Public Service.
The launch of the Central Public Library Quality Service Charter was addressed by Dr
Austin Gatt, Minister of Justice and Local Government who described how through this
development the Central Public Library has become one of the first public services to
introduce a one-stop shop delivery channel. In fact, as from today, there will no longer
be the need for members of the public to produce a birth certificate from the Public
Registry when applying for membership at the Central Public Library in Floriana or the
Gozo Public Library. In order to register as a new member, one would only need to present
his or her identity card and in five minutes, a bar-coded membership card will be issued.
Apart from the more obvious facility of borrowing books, the Central Public Library
also organises activities for children and students. Story telling sessions are held once
a week and whenever requested, a representative of the Library will conduct a library
orientation visit for schoolchildren. Members can also make use of various reference
libraries, audio-visual material and can access the Internet from designated terminals.
The Central Public Library also offers services to persons with special needs, including
the mailing of audiocassettes to visually impaired persons.
As from today, copies of the Quality Service Charter will be available to the public
from the Central Public Library in Floriana.
The Central Public Library Quality Service Charter is one of the four Service Charters
which are being launched during Public Service Week, which this year is being held between
10 and 17 May. |
