07 April 00: Quality
Service Charter for the Department for the Welfare of the Elderly
"The elderly deserve special considertion in today's
society." said Dr Antoine Mifsud Bonnici at the opening of the press conference.
"We should recognise and respect the contribution they have made and ensure that they
enjoy the best quality of life possible."
Dr Mifsud Bonnici also emphasised the Government policy is based on the belief that the
best place for the elderly person is within the home. For this reason a number of
services had been set up which allowed the elderly individual to continue to live within
his or her community. Some examples of this are Telecare and the Home Help and
Handyman services. With the aid offered by these services a number of senior
citizens may now continue to enjoy living in their own home. For those who are
unable to do so, the Government provides a number of residential homes which provide
their basic needs whilst safeguarding their dignity.
Regular clients enjoy a relaxing
morning at the Hamrun Day Centre.
Mr Michael Bezzina explained that, as from last year, the present administration has
implemented a policy by which all services available for elderly persons will be
accessible to persons with disabilities. With the aim of improving the Department's
level of service, a One Stop Shop type of service is being put in place. In fact,
one may apply for all services with a single visit to the Servizz Anzjan outlet at Santa
Venera. Applications for a number of services may also be collected from accessible
locations such as local councils and Social Security branches around the island. For
those who may require it, application forms may also be sent to their home by post.
Mr Michael Bezzina announced that the Bormla Day Centre is expected to be
inaugurated in the next few weeks. Later this year another Day Centre, this time in
Luqa, will be open for use by the general public. |
