Who we are

At the Marriage Registry within the Public Registry we are responsible for the administration of the Marriage Act which regulates all marriages that take place in Gozo.

This charter

This charter outlines the services we provide and the standards of service we aim to achieve and which you can expect from us. It also tells you what to do if you would like our service to change or improve. We regularly monitor and seek to improve the quality of our customer service according to the standards in the Quality Service Charter. Through this charter we are committing ourselves to providing you with a quality service.

When you visit our office we will:

  • be quick, courteous and helpful at all times

  • welcome you in a clean and friendly environment.

When you phone us you can expect us to:

  • answer promptly

  • identify ourselves and our position.

When you write to us you can expect us to:

  • acknowledge your e-mail within 1 working day

  • acknowledge your other correspondence within 1 working day.

In providing information we will:

  • give you the most accurate, up-to-date information available to us

  • answer as fully and precisely as possible.

Opening hours

We are open from Monday to Friday during the following hours:

1st October – 15th June

8:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

16th June – 30th September

8:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m.

Our services

Religious marriages

Two months before your marriage date, you should make a request for the publication of marriage banns at the Public Registry. You should provide:

  • your birth certificate and that of your spouse

  • your identity card and that of your spouse

  • a photocopy of the identity cards of the witnesses.

You should also give us information on:

  • the church or place where the marriage will be held

  • the date of your marriage

  • the name of the priest who will celebrate the marriage ceremony

  • the surname which the bride will be using after marriage.

You can expect us to:

  • publish your marriage bans according to law.

10 days before your marriage date you should collect three documents which we will prepare for you and which you should submit to the parish priest of the place where your marriage will be held.

You can expect us to:

  • take not more than 5 minutes to serve you.

After your wedding mass, you should sign your marriage certificate together with the priest who administered the sacrament and the witnesses.

Civil marriages

Two months before your marriage date, you should make a request for the publication of marriage banns at the Public Registry. You should provide:

  • your birth certificate and that of your spouse

  • your identity card and that of your spouse

  • a photocopy of the identity cards of the witnesses.

You should also give us information on:

  • the place where the marriage will be held

  • the date of your marriage

  • the surname which the bride will be using after marriage.

You can expect us to:

  • publish your marriage banns according to law.

The marriage may take place either at the Marriage Room at the Marriage Registry or any other place that is accepted by the Marriage Registrar.

You can expect us to:

  • conduct your marriage in a well-suited environment.

Other services

At the Marriage Registry Section we also offer other services. We:

  • offer more information if you are a Maltese national marrying a foreigner

  • register divorces conceded by competent Courts abroad. In this case, at least one of the couple is to be a citizen or domiciled in the country where the divorce is granted

  • change the surname of legally separated women to their maiden one

  • legitimate children born out of wedlock once the parents get married.

In very exceptional circumstances, we also permit you to get married before the six weeks stipulated by law.

For these services, you can expect us to:

  • maintain full confidentiality in all cases.

  • providing us with all the relevant information or documents when these are needed.

We will send you an acknowledgement within 1 working day of receipt and a full answer within ten working days of acknowledgement.
